6th Grade – The Write Stuff

Our 6th grade middle son is already an excellent writer.  Apparently his talent doesn’t come from me.  He had to write a persuasive essay on the topic of why his teacher shouldn’t assign homework for the rest of the year.  Here is an excerpt : Another reason is if I don’t understand the homework, I will have all the wrong answers.  I know that I can ask my parents if I need help but my dad works and my mom usually doesn’t remember what she learned in the 6th grade…..

Let’s be clear, the boy is in advanced math which is technically seventh grade.

He got an 100 percent on the assignment.  His teacher did comment on that paragraph though, saying that it could be a bit longer.  What else is there to say?  Should he spell out all the things I don’t remember from the 6th grade?  Plumb the depths of just how much I don’t know?  Find out exactly which grade I mentally checked out in?  I’m pretty sure I have a degree in English from an accredited University, but maybe I just don’t remember.

I for one however, think his teacher should assign extra homework for the rest of the year.  That way, he’s got a shot at turning out better than me by remembering what he learned in the 6th grade.

Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)

Love, Audra
